In the dynamic city of Reno, individuals and businesses face varied storage needs that reflect the pulse of their daily lives and operational demands. Whether it's a family transitioning to a new home, a business managing excess inventory, or an individual needing to declutter their space, the choice between long-term and short-term storage can significantly impact one's convenience, budget, and overall satisfaction. Recognizing this nuanced landscape, Ample Storage emerges as a leading provider dedicated to understanding and catering to these distinct needs with tailored storage solutions that align with every unique scenario.

Defining Short-Term and Long-Term Storage Needs

At the heart of making the right storage decision lies the understanding of what constitutes short-term and long-term storage. Short-term storage, typically defined as a period under three months, caters to immediate, transitional needs. Examples include temporary relocation for work, home renovation projects, or seasonal storage for items like holiday decorations or summer sports equipment. Conversely, long-term storage, extending beyond three months, suits more permanent solutions. This can range from safeguarding heirlooms and excess furniture to storing business documents or inventory.

Cost Considerations and Flexibility

When it comes to renting a storage unit, the duration of rental significantly influences cost. Short-term rentals offer the convenience of temporary space without a long-term commitment, often preferred for quick transitions. However, long-term rentals can prove more economical, benefiting from reduced rates over extended periods. Ample Storage acknowledges these differences with financial incentives, such as discounts for longer commitments, ensuring customers enjoy both competitive prices and flexibility. This flexibility includes accommodating changes in rental terms, enabling customers to adjust their plans without facing hefty penalties, thus responding adeptly to life’s unpredictability.

Benefits of Each Rental Option

Choosing between short-term and long-term rentals comes with its set of advantages. For those in a transitional phase, short-term storage offers an immediate solution, providing a space to keep belongings temporarily with lower upfront costs. On the other hand, long-term storage offers peace of mind, significant savings, and stability for individuals and businesses alike. It's particularly beneficial for securing items during extended travels or for businesses that require consistent, accessible space for inventory and archives.

Choosing the Right Option with Ample Storage

Selecting the best storage option necessitates a thoughtful consideration of the volume of items, the duration of storage, and budget constraints. Ample Storage prides itself on assisting customers through this decision-making process. The team's expertise ensures that each customer receives personalized guidance, ensuring their storage solution is both cost-effective and perfectly suited to their needs.

storage unit tipsImagine unpacking your moving truck and about three quarters of the way through you realize that your storage unit is completely packed. It happens more often than you may think. Selecting the right self storage unit size for your needs can be tricky sometimes. The staff at Reno Ample Storage has been providing self-storage for decades, so we have a few pointers for you. These will keep you from ever finding yourself in this position again.

Consider the Size of Your Truckself-storage-unit-sizes

One of the biggest clues to how large of a unit you need is the size of the truck used. If you loaded up a 24-foot truck, there is no way that everything will fit in a 10x10 unit. However, if you barely filled a 10-foot truck, renting a large storage unit will leave a lot of unused space.

Consider What You Have Packed

Some items are more stackable than others. While boxes can allow for more stacking and thus more efficient use of space, unbroken down tables and couches take up more space. Furthermore, their irregular shapes can prevent effective stacking. If the items you are trying to store are composed mostly of boxes, you will require less space than if you are storing a hodgepodge of differently shaped items.

Consider the Size of Your Home or Apartment

On our website we break down each unit by the home size they can usually handle. These estimates come from the average amount of items that can be found per square foot. If your home has more or less items than normal, these estimates can be off. It is important to consider this when using a self-storage guide like this one.

At Ample Storage in South Reno, we know our self storage unit sizes. We don’t want you to have to go through the hassle of having to move your items from an over-packed unit into something more appropriate. We also don’t want you to have to pay more for storage than you have to. By considering all of these aspects you will be better prepared to select a Reno storage unit size that will fit your belongings perfectly. We also have one of the most experienced staff for self-storage in Reno, so if you are uncertain, bring your truck down and we will help you figure it all out, no problem.

Kitchen Decluttering and Self-Storage

The kitchen is an integral part of your home that isn’t just used for cooking but is often commonplace for the whole family to gather. Whether you’re baking with your kids or entertaining a group of friends, the kitchen is a likely place for mingling to occur. To ensure that your kitchen is functional for all of your needs, consider the following decluttering tips:

#1 Clear Out Cabinets, Drawers, and Countertops

Cabinets, drawers, and countertops are generally the most cluttered areas in any kitchen. Cabinets and drawers make it easy to hide clutter, but often cause the most frustration to homeowners. To start the decluttering process, begin by clearing out all cabinets and drawers and clearing off all the countertops. Lay out all of your items so you can see what is there.

#2 Discard Trash and Set Aside Unwanted Items

Now that you’ve seen all of the items you’ve accumulated in your kitchen, it’s time to throw out any trash or garbage and set aside duplicate or unwanted items for later. Anything that is broken, unusable, or incomplete should be thrown away to make room for items that have more value to you.

#3 Incorporate Cabinet and Countertop Organizers

Kitchen organizers are used to keep things like utensils, pots, pans, food storage containers, spices, and more in a set place. Giving your belongings a home makes it much easier to stay organized and encourages the whole family to put things away in their appropriate places.

#4 Store Duplicate or Unwanted Items

If you have several duplicate or unused items in your collection that are still in good condition, consider storing them for later use. A self-storage unit can clear up space in your home and allows you to keep your belongings for when you’re ready to use them rather than simply tossing out things that still have use.

Living Room Decluttering and Self-Storage

The living room is easily one of the most lived-in spaces of your home. From TV watching and children playing to hosting events and hanging out with friends, the living room gets its fair share of use. Because of this, the living room can quickly become cluttered, full, and overwhelming. To keep your living room organized and clean, take a look at these helpful tips:

#5 Remove Items That Don’t Belong

Because so many of us spend a majority of our time in the living room, it’s pretty common for random items to wind up here, even if that’s not where they should be. Children’s toys, blankets, books, arts and crafts, shoes, and other personal items constantly end up in the living room even though they don’t belong there. Start decluttering your living room by putting away out-of-place items to reinvent this space.

#6 Create A Home For Your Items

For any items that don’t yet have a home and are left all over the place, create a home for them. This can be done with additional organizers like toy bins and baskets or may involve finding a space in another part of the house that has more room or offers more convenient storage space.

#7 Move Items Around The Room

This is a great time to assess how your room is set up and make changes as necessary. This can help you appreciate and love your space again, and will likely help you decide how to make the space more functional for your family. This can also help you decide what items are worth keeping and what might need to go.

#8 Store Unnecessary Items

For any items that simply don’t have a good place in your living room but you aren’t yet ready to part with, consider your self-storage options. Keeping belongings in a storage unit can free up valuable space in your home while ensuring your things are safe.

Dining Room Decluttering and Self-Storage

Since the dining room is typically only used for enjoying meals, it may not seem like a commonly cluttered area of the home, but you’d be surprised. Many people use their dining room as a catch-all area for items that don’t really have a place of the

ir own. Think about where you put your mail, purse, and keys when you get home. If it’s right on top of the dining room table, you’re not the only one.

#9 Remove All Paperwork and File It Away

Does your dining room table get overrun with mail, receipts, and other paperwork? This is a very common spot in the home to collect clutter as it often provides a convenient place to set down your things after a long day. However, this does create a lot of chaos in a typically smaller area. Instead, consider a different solution such as a wall organizer or file folder. There are several mail organizers available that will help keep paperwork organized and away from

self-storage

the table in which you go to eat and relax.

To declutter this area of your home, start by going through all of your paperwork. Organize the papers into piles to be filed away later or to be thrown out entirely.

#10 Put Items In Their Respective Homes

Now that you’ve created a space for all of your belongings, it’s time to put them all away in their respective homes. This will keep items that don’t belong in the diningroom out and give you more space to use your dining room effectively.

#11 Keep Additional Silverware and Dinnerware in Self-Storage

If you have an excess of silverware and dinnerware, it may be a good idea to keep these away in a storage unit. Some of us have additional dinnerware for special occasions like Thanksgiving, but rarely have the need for such items any other time of the year. A self-storage unit for items like this can greatly reduce the clutter in your dining room.

#12 Use Your Space To Your Advantage

Most dining rooms are fairly small and many are just an extension of the kitchen. With this in mind, it’s important to utilize your space appropriately. Adding additional self-storage such as shelving or baskets can be a simple way to hide away items that are usually laid out on the table or take up valuable space.

self storageLet Reno Ample Self-Storage Help You Achieve Your New Year’s Resolutions

Rather than let unwanted or unused items continue to take up space in your home, put them away in a self-storage unit. Sure, you could just hide these things in the garage, a closet, or spare bedroom, but that significantly limits your viable living space and creates clutter. Investing in long-term storage or short-term storage gives you the freedom to do what you want with your home and with your belongings.

If you’ve ever loaded or unloaded a storage unit, then you know just how difficult it can be. The heavy lifting and constant walking back and forth are exhausting. Whether you have several small items or a few large items to transfer over, drive-up storage access would make the process a lot easier. Not only would you have a shorter distance to carry your belongings, but it’s all-around more convenient to have your vehicle on-hand during this time. Reno Ample Storage offers drive-up storage access to its guests for simple, trouble-free moving.

What is a Drive-Up Storage Unit?

Drive-up storage units function similarly to garages in which guests are able to pull their vehicle right up next to the storage unit. These units are located outdoors, but the concrete buildings and metal roofs are designed to keep your items safe and secure. It’s important to be aware that outdoor storage units don’t offer climate control, so any items you put in these units may be affected by changes in temperature and weather. But, if easy, convenient storage is what you’re looking for, consider renting a unit from a storage facility that offers drive-up access.

The Reno-Sparks area is home to one of the nation’s greatest car shows -- Hot August Nights. With the main event coming up quickly, many classic car owners and enthusiasts are pulling out their hot rods in preparation for the popular Show-N-Shine ride-along which features classic vehicles from all over. If you’re like many other car owners who store their classic vehicles in the garage or in the yard with a tarp over it, we’re here to tell you there’s a better way. Not only can classic car storage in a self-storage unit help free up some much-needed space, but it’s also much more beneficial for your precious vehicle as well. Learn more about classic car storage in Reno below!

Benefits of Reno Classic Car Storage

You can considerably improve the way you store your classic vehicle by simply switching to an indoor self-storage unit. There are several benefits of storing a vehicle this way from better preventative care to freeing up space at home.

Indoor Protection from The Elements

One of the best reasons to store your classic vehicle in a storage unit is the protection it will get from the elements. Rain, snow, wind, and other inclement weather can seriously affect the exterior of your vehicle. Such elements can lead to paint deterioration, rust, and possibly even damage to the glass windows and exterior mirrors. These complications typically require professional maintenance and care in order to properly repair the vehicle and restore it to its full glory. And if you’re a classic car owner, you know just how expensive this can be.

Storing your classic car in an enclosed, indoor storage facility will ensure your vehicle remains out of the inclement weather and maintains its aesthetic exterior, unlike if you were to leave your vehicle outdoors.

benefits of classic car storage

UV Ray Protection

Indoor storage also ensures that your vehicle is protected from harmful UV rays caused by the sun. Similar to how the sun affects your skin, UV rays can lead to serious paint damage. Fading, chipping, and complete paint stripping are common for cars left baking under the sun day after day. Eventually, the paint will need to be redone, which is costly. To avoid having to pay for such repairs, keep your classic car in an indoor self-storage unit that blocks out all sun and UV rays.

Free Up Space

Many people keep their classic cars in the garage, under a carport, or concealed by a vehicle cover and parked in the driveway or in the backyard. While keeping your vehicle in the garage helps prevent damage from the elements, this solution takes up a lot of needed space. The same goes for vehicles kept in the yard or driveway. This is especially true if you rarely drive your classic car. Rather than taking up space in your home, storing your vehicle in self-storage keeps your vehicle safe while freeing up room for other things, or other vehicles that are driven more frequently.

Damage and Theft Protection

Even if you live in a safe neighborhood with little theft activity, your vehicle may still be at risk of being stolen or damaged. Vehicles that are highly valuable or vintage are at a greater risk of being damaged or stolen. By keeping your car stored in a secure, indoor storage facility that’s guarded around the clock, you never have to worry about your vehicle being stolen or damaged.

Long-Term Storage

Keeping your vehicle in the garage or outdoors in the driveway may be a good short-term solution, but will that method be effective 6 months down the road when it’s snowing and frigid out? Long-term storage for your classic car will keep your vehicle safe, secure, and perfectly kept for as long as you need.

What You Can and Cannot Put in a Storage Unit

Our Reno self-storage facility constantly gets asked what items can be stored in a storage unit and what shouldn’t be put in a storage unit. Generally, you can put a whole host of things in a storage unit, but there are limits. A self-storage facility is a great place to store unused household items, appliances, keepsakes, clothes, and even vehicles. However, some items are not accepted either due to the safety risk and sanitary implications they pose. So, what can you put in a storage unit and what should you not put in a storage unit? Find out below.

Items that are NOT allowed to be kept in a storage unit

Flammable or Combustible Itemswhat can i store in a storage unit

Flammable and combustible materials pose a severe safety risk in storage facilities and are therefore not allowed. To prevent the possibility of fire, all flammable materials should not be stored in a self-storage unit. These materials may include paint, thinners, household or commercial cleaners, and fuel (gas or diesel). Other combustible or flammable materials that should not be placed in storage include:

Hazardous Materials

Like flammable materials, hazardous items should be kept out of storage units for safety purposes. Most hazardous materials have the potential to catch fire, explode, or put others at risk of danger. All of the following items are prohibited from storage facilities:

Items That Attract Pests and Rodents

It’s important that storage facilities maintain health and safety standards to keep storage renters’ belongings safe. Pests and rodents may easily find their way into a storage unit, causing damage to your property. In an effort to prevent this from happening, all items that attract pests are not allowed to be kept in storage units. This includes garbage and perishable foods.

Wet or Damp Items

Items that are wet or damp should either be thoroughly dried out prior to storage or kept out of a storage unit entirely. Water attracts mold and mildew which thrive in dark locations and can easily spread to other items in your unit leading to damaged goods and unflattering smells. Because of this, all items that are placed in storage need to be completely dry. Things like umbrellas and even certain appliances such as a washing machine need to be wiped clean and dried before being stored for any amount of time.

Living Things

This one is pretty self-explanatory, but living things such as animals, plants, and people cannot be stored in a storage facility. It is also against the law to reside or work in a storage unit.

Items that ARE acceptable for storage

Appliances

Appliances are commonly stored in a storage facility to clear up space at home or in the garage. Storage units are great for appliances as they keep them safe from the elements and can be easily put away and taken out. You may put microwaves, dishwashers, washers and dryers, refrigerators, and more in a storage unit. Just be sure to thoroughly clean the appliances before storing them, and ensure they are completely dry.

Boats, Cars, RVs, and Motorcycles

If you rent a large enough storage unit, you are more than welcome to store your motor vehicles inside. Cars, boats, jet skis, snowmobiles, RVs, motorcycles, and lawnmowers may be stored. However, some facilities will require that the vehicle is operable, so the classic vehicle that you’re trying to get up and running may not be accepted. Check with your local self-storage facilities to see what their policy on storing non-operable vehicles is.

Clothing and Linen

When it comes to storing clothes and linen, it’s important to keep them in an airtight container to prevent pests and humidity from getting a hold of them. Clothes, bedding, towels, blankets, outerwear, and even shoes may be kept in a storage unit.

Home Goods

Just about any home good or household item that isn’t flammable, hazardous, or a living thing is acceptable to be kept in a storage facility. Common home goods that are placed in storage units consist of memorabilia, keepsakes, trophies, antiques, photos, books, and even electronics. Just be sure to protect your delicate items such as electronics by putting them in airtight containers.

Furniture

Furniture is one of the most common items to be kept in a storage facility. All outdoor and indoor furniture including sofas, tables, chairs, shelves, and bed frames may be stored. Mattresses are also acceptable, but they should be properly wrapped in plastic and covered for the duration of their stay. All furniture should also be cleaned and properly protected prior to being stored.

Seasonal Items

Seasonal items are also commonly stored in storage facilities. As long as the materials are not flammable or hazardous, they can be stored. Things such as lights, signs, inflatables, and other holiday or seasonal decor may be kept in a storage unit.

Whether you’re interested in using a storage unit to store items temporarily or for an extended period of time, it’s important that you prepare properly for their stay. The way that you store your furniture and other belongings in a self-storage facility can drastically affect how those items keep while they are there. Often, simply putting your furniture in storage won’t be enough to ensure it’s fully protected from things like dirt, pests, and weather. For your furniture to remain in tip-top shape it should be cleaned, disassembled, and sealed with the proper products or materials prior to being placed in storage. In order to keep your furniture clean, protected, and in good condition, be sure to follow these steps for how to store furniture in a storage unit.

Step #1: Take inventory of the items you’re storing

You may think that making a list of all your belongings is silly, but when it comes to storing large and expensive items like furniture, it’s actually a good way to protect your investments. Typically, people will take inventory of all the items in their storage unit and send the list to their insurance company. This ensures that in the case of stolen or damaged furniture, you will be compensated for your losses.

When it comes to listing your items that are being stored, be sure to include the name of each item along with a description or photo of the object. This will help prove ownership of the items and gives your inventory list some validity.

Step #2: Carefully clean all surfaces of your furniture

Prior to storing your furniture, you should ensure each piece has been properly cleaned using the appropriate cleaning supplies and then sealed for its protection.

Preparing Wood Furniture for Storage:

In order to completely keep moisture out of your wood furniture, you’ll need to coat it with a protective sealant. The best way to keep wood patio furniture safe while it’s being stored in a Reno self-storage unit is to coat the surface with a protective sealant and cover it with a tarp.

Preparing Leather Furniture for Storage:

To prepare your leather furniture for storage, start by vacuuming the surface gently. This will remove any crumbs, or large particles and prepares the furniture for the next steps. Following this, use a 50/50 solution of water and vinegar and a soft clean cloth to wipe down the leather surface, removing any dirt or dust. Next, apply a leather sealant and cover the furniture with a tarp or moving blanket.

Preparing Metal Furniture for Storage:

To prepare your metal furniture for storage, treat any rusted areas with a rust-neutralizing primer and follow with paint to match the metal. Next, you’ll want to apply a coat of paste wax which protects the surface from water damage and will preserve the metal while it’s being stored.

Preparing Fabric Furniture for Storage:

To clean fabric furniture, follow the instructions on the label for each fabric. If there are no instructions or the label has been removed, you can use a mild cleaning solution such as the one listed:

After making your cleaning solution, use a sponge with the detergent mixture to scrub the cushions, then rinse with water and leave the cushions to dry completely.

Step #3: Disassemble large furniture for more efficient storage

Large furniture such as tables, bed frames, and large sofas can be difficult to move and store in their current state. To save yourself some storage room and the trouble of moving big, heavy furniture, be sure to disassemble these pieces prior to moving. To do this, carefully take apart each individual piece of the furniture such as the legs, and wrap the pieces together. Place any smaller pieces of hardware (i.e. nuts, bolts, screws, washers, etc.) in a plastic bag taped to the back of the furniture for safekeeping.

Step #4: Protect your furniture by wrapping it

Placing your furniture in a self-storage unit is a great way to keep it safe from the elements and out of your way while you aren’t using it. However, a storage unit won’t keep your furniture free of dirt and dust. For this reason, we recommend to all our guests that they wrap their furniture using moving blankets or a special kind of cling-wrap designed for moving large items. The movers stretch plastic wrap is also great for securing loose furniture, keeping doors and drawers closed, and binding furniture for safe travel and storage.

Step #5: Find a climate-controlled storage facility

Extreme heat and cold temperatures can drastically affect the quality of your furniture. Leather, wood, glass, and fabric materials can all suffer from weather-related damages if they are stored in a unit where temperatures fluctuate radically. Glass and wood often expand with heat and contract in the cold. This can lead to unwanted warping and dimensional changes in your furniture that result in permanent damage. Other common damages that may occur are rust, fading, and even material that becomes dried out and starts to break apart.

A climate-controlled storage facility will prevent such damages from occurring and leaves you feeling confident about your stored belongings.

Step #6: Strategically place your furniture in the storage unit

The way that you store your furniture can make a huge difference in how it holds up while being in a storage facility. When it comes time to store your furniture in a storage unit, be sure to place all large furniture along the back and sides of the unit. This will keep these big pieces out of the way for when you need to access the unit later. And when it comes to stacking furniture, always be sure to put the heaviest items on the bottom and keep the lighter ones on top. This will help prevent damage to your delicate furniture. Also, keep all furniture off the ground using wood pallets or moving blankets to keep your furniture clean.

When storing your clothes it may seem as easy as packing them up and tossing them into the storage unit. However, that is not the case if you want your clothes to stay in good shape for years to come. From baby clothes to seasonal clothing, it’s necessary to store them in the proper way when it comes to folding, the type of container, and ideal storage conditions. This blog from Ample Storage is here to offer some expert advice on how to store clothes in a storage unit.

Get rid of clothing you know you won’t need

When you’re getting ready to store clothing, it’s obvious that the clothes you are going to store aren’t going to be used in the near future, but there may also be some that you definitely will not be needing anymore. Look for those clothes you know you haven’t worn in months and throw them in a pile to sell or donate at your local Goodwill. Keep an eye for anything ripped, stained, or clothes that don’t fit anymore to reduce the amount that will eventually be put in the storage unit.

Do laundry

Before you even start packing up your clothes make sure that everything is washed and properly dried. Dirty and damp clothes can allow mildew and mold to grow and start to smell awful if left untreated. Stains from food can also attract rodents and insects that can destroy your clothes if they happen to get in.

Don’t use cardboard or plastic bags for storage

While it may be easier to use old cardboard boxes or plastic bags, it’s not ideal for storing clothes. Cardboard and plastic are vulnerable to water damage, bacteria, mold, or pests that will ruin your clothes. We recommend using plastic bins that can be closed shut for protection.

Alternatives to mothballs

Mothballs have been the most popular choice to deter pests and insects from storage units, but there are a few different less toxic and less pungent alternatives to use as mothballs are very toxic. Try a few of these mothball alternatives:

Repack every few years

If your clothes will be left in your storage unit for multiple years, it’s a good idea to go back through and repack and refold them every year or so. Over multiple years, your clothes are prone to permanent creasing and wrinkling. You can also use this chance to check for any water damage, insects, or pests in your unit or clothes.
