This summer has been a tough one for residents of California and Nevada due to the large wildfires in the area. Many families have been forced to evacuate their homes leaving thousands without basic necessities. Fortunately, our community has rallied together to provide some aid to those affected. Local charities and shelters are offering free resources to fire evacuees such as food and lodging, but everyday household items are still very much needed.

If you’re interested in helping victims of the Dixie and Caldor fires who were evacuated from their homes, it may be easier than you had thought. Though monetary donations are always appreciated, things like clothes, pet supplies, and blankets are in high demand. Many of these items are lying in your storage unit and if they’re going unused, they may be better suited for the donation bin. So, if you’ve been asking yourself “how can I help fire evacuees?”, read more below to learn about where you can make donations in Reno.

Donations You Can Make to Help Caldor Fire Victims

Many of the common donation items that are needed can be found in your own storage unit. Most of us with rented storage space keep extra household items just in case they’re ever needed, but oftentimes, the items end up getting donated much later on. If you’ve been considering donating the boxed-up clothing and extra bedding taking up room in your storage unit, now’s the perfect time to do so. Some items that you can donate to help Caldor fire victims include:

Other items that aren’t commonly found in storage units, but are still needed include:

Where and How to Donate

There are numerous facilities and drop-off locations that are accepting donations for victims of the Caldor and Dixie fires in and around Reno. Organizations such as the Carson City Nevada Humane Society, the American Red Cross, the Washoe County Emergency Management, and more are actively seeking and accepting donations.

Local businesses such as Just Brew It and Fuentes Restaurant and Cantina are also pitching in to help out by providing a safe space for evacuees to go along with offering those affected free meals. Lodging is also being offered for free or at a discounted rate for victims of the fires by a few of the local casinos including Boomtown, the Peppermill, and the Atlantis.

Here are some resources that can help you make a donation to help Caldor fire victims:

When storing sensitive and important documents, we want our customers to have the peace of mind that they will be safe and secure. Even in this increasingly digital age, secure document storage for businesses is essential.

It’s necessary to keep important information, but often the boss’ office and the extra storage closet just isn’t enough. Keep reading this blog to explore information about document storage for businesses and our tips and tricks for organization.

Security

When looking for a good storage unit for your important documents, security should be your number one priority. Ample Storage is equipped with many security features that will keep you and your storage unit safe.

Our safety features include:

In addition to our security features, customers are able to use their own lock and use a safe or locked file cabinet to store their documents.

Size

Here at Ample Storage, we offer a multitude of different unit sizes. For document storage for businesses, we recommend our 5’x5’ unit. It’s our smallest unit that’s about the size of a closet. It can hold small furniture, a large tool chest, a small quad and several boxes—which should be more than enough for your documents.

Organization

We have a few unit organization tips that will help you maximize your storage space to ensure everything is easily accessible and safe.

Inventory

Before you even start packing things up, we recommend taking a full inventory of what you will be storing in your unit. Create an inventory list, and make copies so you will know exactly what you will have in there.

Label

After you have tabs on your full inventory, be sure to label. This can save loads of time digging through your unit looking for one specific document. Whether you’re using boxes, storage containers or file cabinets be sure to put labels on what is going in.

Create backups

If possible, create digital backups of every document you will be storing. We do guarantee that your items will be secure, but having backups could save you in the long run.

Pack light, tight and efficiently

Now for the fun part, the actual packing! You can use just about anything to store your documents—boxes, plastic containers, binders, etc—but we recommend using locking, fire retardant safes or filing cabinets.

While packing try to keep it light and store similar documents together. When loading your unit pay close attention to how it’s organized because eventually you’ll have to get things out. Put the documents you will probably never need in the back, and the ones you could possibly need in the front. Locating your documents will never be easier!

24 hour storage units reno nvWhen most people think of self-storage units, they usually think of moving storage, or storage from downsizing. But there are countless creative ways to use your storage unit—we've got five great ideas to get you started:

Storing expensive collections when you’re going to be gone for an extended period

Avoid tempting savvy thieves with the siren song of your collection of handcrafted, mosaic-encrusted Turkish guitars. When you’re off to an island vacation or another long business trip to Singapore, trust your most prized possessions to a secure self-storage unit, like Ample Storage in south Reno.

Set up a recording studio, or form a garage band

If you’re tired of editing barking dogs or bickering children out of your podcasts every week, or the neighbors have complained about band practice so many times that local police have set up a pop-up station at the end of your street, move your studio into a mini self storage unit. Ample Self-Storage units offer privacy, low prices, and great acoustics. You’ll be playing The Knit in no time.

Holding a garage sale AFTER your move

Oh, intentions—how we love you, if just for a little while. As most anyone who has moved knows, the pre-move garage sale is one of the most stressful parts of moving. There’s all the sorting, all the labeling and pricing, all the setting-out, all the attending. All while you’re trying to schedule the movers and get the kids to work on their closets and get your utilities turned on across town.

Shuttle everything you’ve earmarked for a garage sale into a mini self-storage unit at Ample Storage in south Reno for safe-keeping until the move is done, then hold the garage sale right from the storage unit. Moving out of town? Have friends or family sign on to help hold the garage sale from the storage unit, and let them keep part of the profits.

Turn your college-bound child's room into that studio you've been dreaming about

The last of your kids has left for college, and each time you pass that pristinely-preserved room, you feel the pang of possibility: What if? You feel it in your bones that in that room awaits a masterpiece. A painting, a novel, a set of hand-crafted voodoo dolls. But no, you couldn't! If you cleared out and took over that room, not-so-little Danielle or Daniel would never forgive you. And what would you do with all their music equipment and band posters and that dreadful daybed, anyway?

Do you see where we're going with this? Move your college-age child's room into a small, affordable unit at Ample Self-Storage until they're ready to come home. They never have to know.

Burning Man storage!

Reno is ground zero for Burning Man preparations, and many out-of-towners maintain a mini self-storage unit in Reno all year for their Burning Man gear, structures, and supplies. If you’re a local and a regular Burner, you probably have a garage or a room in your house that’s overrun with playa material, maybe even bits of art car. Set your space free and let Ample Self-Storage in south Reno keep your precious playa possessions safe and ready for your next burn.

Like it or not, Christmas often seems to be mostly about stuff, and more stuff! Even when we haven’t asked for much, or anything at all, people love to give us stuff. Stuff for the kitchen, stuff for the bedroom, stuff for the kids, stuff for the lawn. Some of this stuff is nice to have, and some of it we probably need. But this time of year, all that stuff turns to clutter, and clutter can quickly get overwhelming when we’re busy with other things. Pretty soon, the holidays and their aftermath feel like just one more chore to be tackled.
We’ve got a few ideas to help you keep your Christmas clutter-free. christmas clutter

Go through closets in advance

Spring cleaning may be the traditional time we throw open the windows and go through the house with a fine-toothed comb to see what we can still use and what can be recycled, re-gifted, donated, or thrown away. But we think the space between Thanksgiving and Christmas is the perfect time for purging, big and small, because we tend to more readily part with old things when we’re anticipating the new things that will soon be taking their place. Bonus: Less to clean for Christmas company!

Get kids on board with cleaning by with an “If you want it, make room for it” rule

If an extra 25 pounds of toys and trinkets to trip over, look for, or otherwise wrangle in the kids’ rooms doesn’t sound like fun, get the kids sweeping through their rooms for things to sacrifice to the donation pile by instituting the rule that no new stuff comes in until an equal or greater number of old stuff goes out.

Get a temporary self-storage unit

Mini self-storage units can be the perfect way to get a “stuff” situation under control until you have a chance to devote some time and thinking to what’s going where, and when. Sometimes, the holidays just get too busy before we’ve had a chance to sit down and sort everything from mismatched chairs to overrun toolboxes to overflowing bookshelves. But there are relatives to make room for, and potentially more incoming furniture, tools, books, and other things. A self-storage unit like the roomy, secure, and affordable storage units at Ample Storage in south Reno can keep your in-flux stuff organized, safe, and out of your way until after you’ve enjoyed (and recovered from) the festivities.

Ask for intangibles this year

Don’t want any more stuff? Consider letting friends and family know you want to do Christmas differently this year. Instead of more stuff, point to experiences you’d like to have, places you’d like to go, charities you’d like a donation sent to in your name. Better yet, suggest pooling all your money and going somewhere amazing or having a great experience together as a family. No stuff required!

There are numerous reasons you might need some temporary storage space. It could be relocation, home staging for a sale, or maybe you’re moving and have a few days in between where you have nowhere to store your belongings. Whatever your situation is there are a few common factors you’ll want to keep in mind during the process, and this blog will offer some short term storage advice and options.

Your definition of short term could be a little different, but it is generally defined as 3 months or less. The temporary storage option you end up making should be determined on your specific needs. While on the hunt for temporary storage try to keep the following things in mind.

How Much Space?

Will you be storing a lot or a little? Will you just be storing a few boxes or will you need space for large furniture or possibly a family car? Here at Ample Storage, we have 8 different storage unit sizes ranging from our smallest at 5’ by 5’, which is about the size of a closet, to our most spacious at 20’ by 20’, which is about the size of a two-car garage. Check out our storage unit size page on our website, and we have clear visuals to help you decide how much space you need.

Benefits of Self Storage for College Students

While you may not think that you have enough stuff to really need a storage unit, there are quite a few benefits for college students who use them. For instance, a storage unit is perfect for anyone living in a dorm or students with valuable items that they want to keep safe. So, take a look below to see how self storage for college students could benefit you!

storage unit tips
More Space in Your Dorm/Room

Typically, college students stay in a dorm or other form of student living which means your space is going to be limited. Having to share a single room with another person will definitely cut into the amount of room you’re actually able to use which means you need to find an alternative option for storage. Luckily, a self storage unit is the perfect solution. Rather than having to get rid of your treasured belongings, put some of the things you don’t use as often in a secure storage unit. This will keep your items safe and out of the way so you can enjoy as much of your space as possible without all the clutter.

Keep Your Stuff Protected

Not only do storage units for college students free up some much needed personal space, but it also ensures that your valuable items are protected. Dorm theft is quite common in student living facilities and you never know who may be in and out of your room while you're not there. Thankfully, a self storage unit that has 24 hour surveillance will ensure the security and safety of your most prized possessions. Instead of stressing about whether or not your belongings are safe, utilize a secure storage unit and stop worrying about your things.

Convenience and Cost

If you’re a college student living in a dorm, this is for you. As you’re probably aware, once the semester has ended, you’re going to have to move back home for the summer. Students aren’t allowed to stay in their dorm over the summer break which means you’ll have to move all of your things back home and then back to the dorms once classes start again. And if your home is another state, this task can be even more of a hassle. If you have a lot of stuff or any large furniture then you may need a moving truck just to get everything from one place to another, or may have to make multiple trips which can be costly. Rather than struggle with this inconvenience, rent yourself a self storage unit for the summer. Ample Storage offers a variety of storage unit sizes at a fair price. And, our storage facility is conveniently located in Reno so your things don’t have to travel too far. Moving is already a huge pain, but self storage for college students can make it easier.

The Perfect Storage Unit Sizes for College Students self storage unit size 5x10

At Reno Ample Storage, we offer storage unit sizes ranging from 5x5 all the way to 20x20. Most college students haven’t acquired enough stuff to require a storage unit as large as the 20x20, but each individual has different needs. With that in mind, we recommend renting a storage unit in either the 5x5 or 5x10 size. A 5x5 storage unit is about the size of a large closet, but it can fit more than you may think. However, if you have any furniture that needs to be stored, a 5x10 size unit would probably better suit your needs.

long term furniture storage, storing patio furniture for the winterAre you prone to forgetting to bring in your outdoor tables and chairs before the wet and cold winter weather ruins your furniture? With winter fast approaching, it’s time to start making arrangements for your outdoor furniture. What better way to store them than in a long term furniture storage unit? This will help keep your patio furniture protected against the elements, and keeps you from having to make room to store it in your home or garage. Here are our tips for storing patio furniture for the winter in a self storage unit.

Cushions and Fabrics

Patio fabric and cushions should be cleaned prior to storing. This will ensure that it doesn’t develop mold or mildew while in storage and means it’s ready to use when the weather starts to clear up. To do this, follow the instructions on the label for each fabric. If there are no instructions or the label has been removed, you can use a mild cleaning solution such as the one listed:

After making your cleaning solution, use a sponge with the detergent mixture to scrub the cushions, then rinse with water and leave the cushions to dry completely. You can also use this solution on your patio umbrella.

Before storing away in your storage unit, either wrap your cushions and fabrics in tarps or blankets, or put them in a container bin. This will keep the fabric clean safe while it’s being stored.

Plastic Furniture

Before storing any type of furniture, it’s important that it go into the storage unit clean, and properly protected. Fortunately, cleaning plastic furniture is fairly simple. All you need is a detergent solution, water, and a microfiber cloth. You can create your own cleaning solution using a mixture of dish soap and water, and rub it on using your microfiber cloth. Then, follow this process by rinsing the furniture with water.

Plastic furniture can become very brittle when it freezes, which can lead to cracking. In order to avoid this, be sure to store plastic furniture, such as tables and chairs, in a temperature controlled unit.

Metal Furniture

Metal is prone to rusting when it becomes wet, which can be very damaging to your furniture. For example, untreated rust can lead to the weakening of the metal and cause the material to begin breaking down. To prepare your metal furniture for long term furniture storage, treat any rusted areas with a rust-neutralizing primer and follow with paint to match the metal. Next, you’ll want to apply a coat of paste wax which protects the surface from water damage and will preserve the metal while it’s being stored. Lastly, be sure to keep your metal furniture in a dry Reno self storage unit and for added protection, cover it with a tarp to keep clean.

Wicker Furniturereno self storage furniture, wicker furniture baskets

Wicker furniture is more delicate than other types of patio furniture. Because of its design, dirt and dust often get trapped within the small crevices of the material which makes it more difficult to clean. Luckily, the process will be much easier with these tips. Start by dusting your wicker furniture with a clean soft-bristled paintbrush. The bristles will be able to get into the crevices much easier and will easily remove dirt from those hard to reach places. Then, use a cleaning solution of ¼ cup liquid dish soap and 2 cups of water with a microfiber cloth to wipe down your wicker surface. You can also add 1 cup of white vinegar to your solution if you notice any mold or mildew. And finally, apply a moisture repellent to the feet, legs and anywhere else the grain may be exposed.

Before storing your wicker furniture in a storage unit, be sure to cover it with a tarp or large cloth, and be sure to keep it dry.

Wood Furniture

When moisture gets trapped inside wood, it can cause irreparable damages. This is especially true if the water within the wood freezes because it can later cause the wood to crack. Also, it’s important to keep in mind that wood can absorb moisture in the air, so even if you cover your wood furniture, moisture can still get in. In order to completely keep moisture out of your wood furniture, coat it with a protective sealant.

The best way to keep wood patio furniture safe while it’s being stored in a Reno self storage unit, is to coat the surface with a sealant, and cover it with a tarp. This will also help keep it dust and dirt free.

reno storage unit, storage in reno nv, reno storage facilitiesYou may think that simply putting your furniture in storage will provide all the protection it needs while you’re not using it, but this is not always true. Nonchalantly placing furniture that is dirty or hasn’t been properly disassembled is not proper storage etiquette. You want your furniture to be secure and safe while it’s in a storage unit and this starts with how you store it in the first place. If you want your furniture to come out of storage looking just as it did before, or even better than when you put it there, then take a look at these furniture storage tips.

Prepping Your Furniture for Storage

It’s important to prepare your furniture for long term storage. Depending on the length of time your furniture is in a storage unit, it could affect how well your furniture stays intact. Help keep your furniture in the best condition possible by taking care of it before it goes to sit in storage.

Cleaning

Begin by cleaning your furniture. Use a leather cleaning solution to clean leather sofas and chairs. You can find multi-surface cleaners to tackle dirt and dust on tabletops and matching stools or chairs. For end tables and coffee tables made of glass, use a glass cleaner to get streak free results. Also, you can use a rust protectant for furniture made of metal. Properly cleaning your furniture is the first step to maintaining its quality.

Disassembling

Another preparation you should make before putting furniture in a storage unit is to disassemble anything you can. You can take the legs off of tables and chairs, dismantle bookshelves, and take apart bed frames. Make sure you keep all parts of the piece of furniture together. You can place nails and screws or other small hardware pieces in plastic bags and attach it to the furniture so you don’t misplace or lose it. Disassembling furniture makes transporting and storing such items much easier. This will also allow you to have extra room in your storage unit for other items or even more furniture.

Protecting

After you’ve cleaned and disassembled all the furniture that you could, go the extra step and cover your furniture for further protection. You can buy couch and sofa covers that are fitted to form around the entire sofa. Sheets can be used to cover mattresses and other large pieces of furniture. Another helpful tool you’ll want to invest in is stretch wrap. This will keep your furniture secure and can also cut down on dirt and dust that might collect on your furniture.

How To Properly Pack Your Storage Unitstorage in reno nv

Now that you’ve prepped your furniture for travel and storage, it’s time to organize your furniture into your storage unit. You want to be careful where you place things because carelessness can result in damaged furniture and that’s the last thing you want to happen. You also want to be strategic about your placement in order to get the most out of your unit. Think of it as a game of Tetris, and try to utilize as much space as possible without damaging any furniture.

Keep These Furniture Storage Tips In Mind

It’s important to know that not all storage units come with climate control, so you’ll want to research this before settling on a storage unit. Climate control can really affect how your furniture keeps while it sits in long term storage. High heat can ruin leather and the cold can weaken wooden tables and chairs. Maintaining the temperature of your unit can help avoid tragic mishaps like damaged furniture.

self-storage unit, reno storage facilities

Moving your bed, whether it's into a new home or into self storage units can be a daunting task. Knowing how to store a mattress in a storage unit is essential. Luckily, Ample Storage has a step-by-step guide to help you pack up and move your bed into any self-storage units in Reno, Nevada.

Remove & Box Up Bedding

The first step is to remove all of the bedding from your mattress, fold, and box it up.

Prep & Pack the Mattress

Before you wrap up your mattress, make sure that you deep clean it with upholstery cleaner. Then wrap the mattress in bubble wrap and place it off to the side. Wrapping your mattress in bubble wrap will prevent it from getting snagged or ripped during the moving process.

Disassemble the Bed Frame

Next, you will want to disassemble the bed frame. After you have taken apart the frame, you can individually wrap each piece.

Load the Moving Truck

Now that you have taken apart and wrapped up each piece of the bed, you can begin loading these pieces into the moving truck. The first item that you should place in the moving truck is the mattress. A great tip for loading your mattress is to place it vertically on the wall to make room for other items and boxes. Then you will load in the bed frame pieces and the boxes of bedding.

How to Load These Items in Your Self-Storage Unit

Once you arrive at Reno storage facilities, remove all of your items. For optimal space, place the mattress against the wall of the storage unit. Tip: If you plan on storing your mattress for a long period of time, it is recommended that you lay the mattress flat in the unit and do not place any items on top of the mattress. There are a few options for storing the frame pieces. You can either lay the pieces on the floor close to the wall, or you can stand them up in a corner to save space. Lastly, place the boxes in the unit.

Storing a Box Spring

To store a box spring, you will start off by vacuuming both sides. Once you have vacuumed, you can place the box spring in a cover, bubble wrap, or storage bag. When it comes to moving the box spring, follow the same steps for storing a mattress. When it's time to take your box spring out of storage, go ahead and sprinkle it with some baking soda to keep it fresh.
