However, some items are not accepted either due to the safety risk and sanitary implications they pose. So, what can you put in a storage unit and what should you not put in a storage unit? While it may sound bizarre, cleaning your books prior to putting them in your storage unit will help protect from future soiling or staining. Using a soft chemical-free wipe or a nonmagnetic cloth, simply wipe down the outside covers and spine. This will keep your books protected from damage in your storage unit.

Use dividers or wrap your rare books

For some extra protection, pack your books with dividers in between to avoid any covers sticking together. You can use any type of divider, but we recommend using something that doesn’t have words on it so it doesn’t transfer to the book.

For rare or antique books, consider wrapping them to protect them from any damage. We recommend wrapping them in an acid-free archival paper to prevent any yellowing and provide for the most protection.

Generally—yes. However, it usually comes at a lower protection rate, usually around 10% of your total personal property amount. 

Renter’s insurance will usually cover stored items like clothing, furniture, electronics and appliances from theft, fires, tornados or water leak damage from the unit. On the other hand it doesn’t protect pest damage, floods and earthquakes—unless your renter’s insurance is upgraded.

Before

  1.  Get rid of things. This could be one of the most helpful things you can do. Go through all your old clothes and items, and consider donating to your local thrift store. The less you start with the less trouble you will have.

This is the easiest, simplest way to make room in your storage unit is to get rid of some things. Go through piece by piece of what you plan to keep in your storage unit, and thoroughly assess if you will need this item or if it will just be collecting dust in the back of the unit.
