Whether you’re interested in using a storage unit to store items temporarily or for an extended period of time, it’s important that you prepare properly for their stay. The way that you store your furniture and other belongings in a self-storage facility can drastically affect how those items keep while they are there. Often, simply putting your furniture in storage won’t be enough to ensure it’s fully protected from things like dirt, pests, and weather. For your furniture to remain in tip-top shape it should be cleaned, disassembled, and sealed with the proper products or materials prior to being placed in storage. In order to keep your furniture clean, protected, and in good condition, be sure to follow these steps for how to store furniture in a storage unit.

Step #1: Take inventory of the items you’re storing

You may think that making a list of all your belongings is silly, but when it comes to storing large and expensive items like furniture, it’s actually a good way to protect your investments. Typically, people will take inventory of all the items in their storage unit and send the list to their insurance company. This ensures that in the case of stolen or damaged furniture, you will be compensated for your losses.

When it comes to listing your items that are being stored, be sure to include the name of each item along with a description or photo of the object. This will help prove ownership of the items and gives your inventory list some validity.

Step #2: Carefully clean all surfaces of your furniture

Prior to storing your furniture, you should ensure each piece has been properly cleaned using the appropriate cleaning supplies and then sealed for its protection.

Preparing Wood Furniture for Storage:

In order to completely keep moisture out of your wood furniture, you’ll need to coat it with a protective sealant. The best way to keep wood patio furniture safe while it’s being stored in a Reno self-storage unit is to coat the surface with a protective sealant and cover it with a tarp.

Preparing Leather Furniture for Storage:

To prepare your leather furniture for storage, start by vacuuming the surface gently. This will remove any crumbs, or large particles and prepares the furniture for the next steps. Following this, use a 50/50 solution of water and vinegar and a soft clean cloth to wipe down the leather surface, removing any dirt or dust. Next, apply a leather sealant and cover the furniture with a tarp or moving blanket.

Preparing Metal Furniture for Storage:

To prepare your metal furniture for storage, treat any rusted areas with a rust-neutralizing primer and follow with paint to match the metal. Next, you’ll want to apply a coat of paste wax which protects the surface from water damage and will preserve the metal while it’s being stored.

Preparing Fabric Furniture for Storage:

To clean fabric furniture, follow the instructions on the label for each fabric. If there are no instructions or the label has been removed, you can use a mild cleaning solution such as the one listed:

After making your cleaning solution, use a sponge with the detergent mixture to scrub the cushions, then rinse with water and leave the cushions to dry completely.

Step #3: Disassemble large furniture for more efficient storage

Large furniture such as tables, bed frames, and large sofas can be difficult to move and store in their current state. To save yourself some storage room and the trouble of moving big, heavy furniture, be sure to disassemble these pieces prior to moving. To do this, carefully take apart each individual piece of the furniture such as the legs, and wrap the pieces together. Place any smaller pieces of hardware (i.e. nuts, bolts, screws, washers, etc.) in a plastic bag taped to the back of the furniture for safekeeping.

Step #4: Protect your furniture by wrapping it

Placing your furniture in a self-storage unit is a great way to keep it safe from the elements and out of your way while you aren’t using it. However, a storage unit won’t keep your furniture free of dirt and dust. For this reason, we recommend to all our guests that they wrap their furniture using moving blankets or a special kind of cling-wrap designed for moving large items. The movers stretch plastic wrap is also great for securing loose furniture, keeping doors and drawers closed, and binding furniture for safe travel and storage.

Step #5: Find a climate-controlled storage facility

Extreme heat and cold temperatures can drastically affect the quality of your furniture. Leather, wood, glass, and fabric materials can all suffer from weather-related damages if they are stored in a unit where temperatures fluctuate radically. Glass and wood often expand with heat and contract in the cold. This can lead to unwanted warping and dimensional changes in your furniture that result in permanent damage. Other common damages that may occur are rust, fading, and even material that becomes dried out and starts to break apart.

A climate-controlled storage facility will prevent such damages from occurring and leaves you feeling confident about your stored belongings.

Step #6: Strategically place your furniture in the storage unit

The way that you store your furniture can make a huge difference in how it holds up while being in a storage facility. When it comes time to store your furniture in a storage unit, be sure to place all large furniture along the back and sides of the unit. This will keep these big pieces out of the way for when you need to access the unit later. And when it comes to stacking furniture, always be sure to put the heaviest items on the bottom and keep the lighter ones on top. This will help prevent damage to your delicate furniture. Also, keep all furniture off the ground using wood pallets or moving blankets to keep your furniture clean.

With new Kindles and e-readers, your big collection of books might start to get in the way around the house, but you’re not alone if you don’t want to get rid of your books. There’s just something about opening up a book that these modern e-readers don’t do.

However, storing books can be more difficult than it seems because books are very susceptible to humidity, dust and dirt, moths, and water damage. Keep reading to explore some tips for the most optimal book storage.

Clean your books

While it may sound bizarre, cleaning your books prior to putting them in your storage unit will help protect from future soiling or staining. Using a soft chemical-free wipe or a nonmagnetic cloth, simply wipe down the outside covers and spine. This will keep your books protected from damage in your storage unit.

Use dividers or wrap your rare books

For some extra protection, pack your books with dividers in between to avoid any covers sticking together. You can use any type of divider, but we recommend using something that doesn’t have words on it so it doesn’t transfer to the book.

For rare or antique books, consider wrapping them to protect them from any damage. We recommend wrapping them in an acid-free archival paper to prevent any yellowing and provide for the most protection.

how to store books in a storage unitPack with spine down or flat

Books are fragile and the pages are easily ripped, so when you’re packing your books up make sure they are packed spine down or just flat stacked on each other. Packing them sideways allows the larger surface area to carry the weight of the books to help distribute the weight better.

We also recommend packing by size and weight by packing the heavy books on the bottom with lighter ones on top and remembering to use dividers, not packing a single box too heavy, and using plastic bins not cardboard boxes.

Alternate spines when packing

Another packing tip is alternating the spines of the books when you’re packing them to maximize the storage space and fit as many books as you can. It will give you more space as well as preventing spine damage.

24 hour storage units reno nvWhen most people think of self-storage units, they usually think of moving storage, or storage from downsizing. But there are countless creative ways to use your storage unit—we've got five great ideas to get you started:

Storing expensive collections when you’re going to be gone for an extended period

Avoid tempting savvy thieves with the siren song of your collection of handcrafted, mosaic-encrusted Turkish guitars. When you’re off to an island vacation or another long business trip to Singapore, trust your most prized possessions to a secure self-storage unit, like Ample Storage in south Reno.

Set up a recording studio, or form a garage band

If you’re tired of editing barking dogs or bickering children out of your podcasts every week, or the neighbors have complained about band practice so many times that local police have set up a pop-up station at the end of your street, move your studio into a mini self storage unit. Ample Self-Storage units offer privacy, low prices, and great acoustics. You’ll be playing The Knit in no time.

Holding a garage sale AFTER your move

Oh, intentions—how we love you, if just for a little while. As most anyone who has moved knows, the pre-move garage sale is one of the most stressful parts of moving. There’s all the sorting, all the labeling and pricing, all the setting-out, all the attending. All while you’re trying to schedule the movers and get the kids to work on their closets and get your utilities turned on across town.

Shuttle everything you’ve earmarked for a garage sale into a mini self-storage unit at Ample Storage in south Reno for safe-keeping until the move is done, then hold the garage sale right from the storage unit. Moving out of town? Have friends or family sign on to help hold the garage sale from the storage unit, and let them keep part of the profits.

Turn your college-bound child's room into that studio you've been dreaming about

The last of your kids has left for college, and each time you pass that pristinely-preserved room, you feel the pang of possibility: What if? You feel it in your bones that in that room awaits a masterpiece. A painting, a novel, a set of hand-crafted voodoo dolls. But no, you couldn't! If you cleared out and took over that room, not-so-little Danielle or Daniel would never forgive you. And what would you do with all their music equipment and band posters and that dreadful daybed, anyway?

Do you see where we're going with this? Move your college-age child's room into a small, affordable unit at Ample Self-Storage until they're ready to come home. They never have to know.

Burning Man storage!

Reno is ground zero for Burning Man preparations, and many out-of-towners maintain a mini self-storage unit in Reno all year for their Burning Man gear, structures, and supplies. If you’re a local and a regular Burner, you probably have a garage or a room in your house that’s overrun with playa material, maybe even bits of art car. Set your space free and let Ample Self-Storage in south Reno keep your precious playa possessions safe and ready for your next burn.

Like it or not, Christmas often seems to be mostly about stuff, and more stuff! Even when we haven’t asked for much, or anything at all, people love to give us stuff. Stuff for the kitchen, stuff for the bedroom, stuff for the kids, stuff for the lawn. Some of this stuff is nice to have, and some of it we probably need. But this time of year, all that stuff turns to clutter, and clutter can quickly get overwhelming when we’re busy with other things. Pretty soon, the holidays and their aftermath feel like just one more chore to be tackled.
We’ve got a few ideas to help you keep your Christmas clutter-free. christmas clutter

Go through closets in advance

Spring cleaning may be the traditional time we throw open the windows and go through the house with a fine-toothed comb to see what we can still use and what can be recycled, re-gifted, donated, or thrown away. But we think the space between Thanksgiving and Christmas is the perfect time for purging, big and small, because we tend to more readily part with old things when we’re anticipating the new things that will soon be taking their place. Bonus: Less to clean for Christmas company!

Get kids on board with cleaning by with an “If you want it, make room for it” rule

If an extra 25 pounds of toys and trinkets to trip over, look for, or otherwise wrangle in the kids’ rooms doesn’t sound like fun, get the kids sweeping through their rooms for things to sacrifice to the donation pile by instituting the rule that no new stuff comes in until an equal or greater number of old stuff goes out.

Get a temporary self-storage unit

Mini self-storage units can be the perfect way to get a “stuff” situation under control until you have a chance to devote some time and thinking to what’s going where, and when. Sometimes, the holidays just get too busy before we’ve had a chance to sit down and sort everything from mismatched chairs to overrun toolboxes to overflowing bookshelves. But there are relatives to make room for, and potentially more incoming furniture, tools, books, and other things. A self-storage unit like the roomy, secure, and affordable storage units at Ample Storage in south Reno can keep your in-flux stuff organized, safe, and out of your way until after you’ve enjoyed (and recovered from) the festivities.

Ask for intangibles this year

Don’t want any more stuff? Consider letting friends and family know you want to do Christmas differently this year. Instead of more stuff, point to experiences you’d like to have, places you’d like to go, charities you’d like a donation sent to in your name. Better yet, suggest pooling all your money and going somewhere amazing or having a great experience together as a family. No stuff required!

Here at Ample Storage we encourage our customers to stay informed and educated about our processes. Today we will be exploring some of the frequently asked questions about self-storage units.

best value1. How much is a storage unit?

When it comes to self-storage unit pricing it usually depends on the size and location of the storage unit. Contact our office today for pricing information.

2. Can you live in a storage unit?

The short answer to this question is no. For starters, storage unit facilities are businesses, and authorities stress the fact that living in an area that’s not zoned for residential use is illegal.

In addition, storage units pose a number of health concerns that would be incredibly tough to deal with, including no windows, no running water, limited space and usually  management will do rounds before closing to make sure everything is locked up—meaning there’s a chance you can get locked in your unit.

3. What size storage unit do I need?

Determining what size storage unit you will need will depend on how much gear you decide to store. At Ample Storage, we have a wide selection of units ranging from 5’x5’ to 20’x20’.

The smaller 5’x5’ units can hold roughly the contents of an average one bed apartment. This includes a bed, a sofa, miscellaneous appliances and other small items.

Our two largest  units come in 10’x40’ to 20’x20’. These two are about the size of a two car garage with plenty of room for a couple cars, several bed sets, sofas and other furniture. Check out our storage unit sizes to discover which size will fit your needs best.

4. Does renters insurance cover storage units?

Generally—yes. However, it usually comes at a lower protection rate, usually around 10% of your total personal property amount.

Renter’s insurance will usually cover stored items like clothing, furniture, electronics and appliances from theft, fires, tornados or water leak damage from the unit. On the other hand it doesn’t protect pest damage, floods and earthquakes—unless your renter’s insurance is upgraded.

5. How do you organize a storage unit?

The best way to tackle this situation is plan out exactly what you’ll be storing away in your unit. After you know what will be in there, you should map out where you will put your items. Start with heavier items you won’t plan on needing in the back, and stack boxes high to make sure everything fits.

Also, be sure to label everything to be more efficient when you need to find a specific item. Pay close attention to fragile items, electronics, books or magazines that could be prone to water damage on the floor.

For more information on how to organize your storage unit check out our storage unit tips or our How to Maximize Storage Space blog post.

6. Who should rent a storage unit?

When it comes to deciding to rent a storage unit it depends on your specific needs and situation at the time. Many renters use units for extra gear that doesn’t fit in the garage, and that is not often used.

Another common use for a self-storage unit is during the moving process. It’s great for holding your belongings for a month or two, a college student who’s going home for the summer or if you plan on moving away for just a few months.

7. Do I need a climate-controlled storage unit?

Climate-controlled storage units are usually only necessary for certain situations and items, or if you are willing to pay the extra price. They’re great for specialty items that can deteriorate severely over time like artwork, old photographs, collectibles, antiques, important documents or musical instruments.

Climate-controlled units are also great if you plan to leave your belongings for an extended period of time, or if you live in a severely hot or cold climate.

8. What features will I get in a storage unit?

At Ample Storage we provide a number of benefits to accommodate your storage needs. We offer numerous sizes, competitive prices and specials, no deposit or contracts, ground units and 24/7 security. Give us a call today to get started!

9. What should I look for in a storage unit?

Before you sign up or get locked into a contract be sure you’re looking out for a couple things first. The top priority is usually security. You don’t want to drive away from your unit wondering if all your belongings will still be there the next time you come back.

Be sure to also do some research on; accessibility (24 hour access, hours, etc.), pricing, availability, location and reviews.

10. Should I insure items that are placed in a storage unit?

Although our storage unit facilities are monitored 24/7, it is a good idea to insure your belongings. Storage units aren’t totally immune to disaster where arson, flooding and theft aren’t totally unheard of. While your belongings are in very capable hands at Ample Storage, storage unit insurance can give you that extra peace of mind.

Benefits of Self Storage for College Students

While you may not think that you have enough stuff to really need a storage unit, there are quite a few benefits for college students who use them. For instance, a storage unit is perfect for anyone living in a dorm or students with valuable items that they want to keep safe. So, take a look below to see how self storage for college students could benefit you!

storage unit tips
More Space in Your Dorm/Room

Typically, college students stay in a dorm or other form of student living which means your space is going to be limited. Having to share a single room with another person will definitely cut into the amount of room you’re actually able to use which means you need to find an alternative option for storage. Luckily, a self storage unit is the perfect solution. Rather than having to get rid of your treasured belongings, put some of the things you don’t use as often in a secure storage unit. This will keep your items safe and out of the way so you can enjoy as much of your space as possible without all the clutter.

Keep Your Stuff Protected

Not only do storage units for college students free up some much needed personal space, but it also ensures that your valuable items are protected. Dorm theft is quite common in student living facilities and you never know who may be in and out of your room while you're not there. Thankfully, a self storage unit that has 24 hour surveillance will ensure the security and safety of your most prized possessions. Instead of stressing about whether or not your belongings are safe, utilize a secure storage unit and stop worrying about your things.

Convenience and Cost

If you’re a college student living in a dorm, this is for you. As you’re probably aware, once the semester has ended, you’re going to have to move back home for the summer. Students aren’t allowed to stay in their dorm over the summer break which means you’ll have to move all of your things back home and then back to the dorms once classes start again. And if your home is another state, this task can be even more of a hassle. If you have a lot of stuff or any large furniture then you may need a moving truck just to get everything from one place to another, or may have to make multiple trips which can be costly. Rather than struggle with this inconvenience, rent yourself a self storage unit for the summer. Ample Storage offers a variety of storage unit sizes at a fair price. And, our storage facility is conveniently located in Reno so your things don’t have to travel too far. Moving is already a huge pain, but self storage for college students can make it easier.

The Perfect Storage Unit Sizes for College Students self storage unit size 5x10

At Reno Ample Storage, we offer storage unit sizes ranging from 5x5 all the way to 20x20. Most college students haven’t acquired enough stuff to require a storage unit as large as the 20x20, but each individual has different needs. With that in mind, we recommend renting a storage unit in either the 5x5 or 5x10 size. A 5x5 storage unit is about the size of a large closet, but it can fit more than you may think. However, if you have any furniture that needs to be stored, a 5x10 size unit would probably better suit your needs.

Moving can be stressful and can cause some necessary things to be overlooked, but Ample Storage has offered up some Reno moving help with these 2020 moving tips. The first steps you take to start moving are the most important and are often the ones that people dread the most. You can either choose to make the move on your own or hire movers for help along the way. Either way, the steps you take in the beginning make the whole process a lot easier for everyone.

Take Inventory

Begin by taking note of everything that you plan to move. Write down what’s most important, what’s fragile, and even label what room you want each box to go in. This will help you organize your boxes and will help you keep track of where everything is.

Purge

Throughout this process, you may begin to realize how much unnecessary stuff you actually have. Over the years, it’s easy to accumulate a lot of things that you might not need in your new home. Getting rid of these things you don’t need anymore will ease the packing load and will cut down the time of your packing process. Donate the things you decide you don’t want to take with you on your move.boxes storage, reno self storage

Choose What Room To Tackle First

After you have taken note of everything, it’s time to decide where you are starting the packing process. The key to this step is not moving to another room until the first room you chose is completely packed and ready. Packing can be a long process, so it’s best to start with a room that you don’t use often. This will help you keep a sense of normalcy in your most-used rooms as long as you can. You can also choose to get the most difficult things to move out of the house first! Get the big, heavy things out so you can just focus on packing the rest of the house.

Pack In Advance

You will be surprised by how much you actually need to pack! To help with this, get the non-essentials out of the way. These are the things you won’t need to use from now until you are all settled in your new home. These items could be decorations, cooking items you don’t always use, toys and even your electronics! Get those out of the way so you just have to focus on the main things in your home.

Scheduling Movers

Packing can be very overwhelming! Getting professional help can only make your moving process smoother and take away some of your stress. Do your research on companies, compare quotes, and read reviews to make sure you are hiring the best company for your move. Then let the movers take it from there and move i!  reno self storage

long term furniture storage, storing patio furniture for the winterAre you prone to forgetting to bring in your outdoor tables and chairs before the wet and cold winter weather ruins your furniture? With winter fast approaching, it’s time to start making arrangements for your outdoor furniture. What better way to store them than in a long term furniture storage unit? This will help keep your patio furniture protected against the elements, and keeps you from having to make room to store it in your home or garage. Here are our tips for storing patio furniture for the winter in a self storage unit.

Cushions and Fabrics

Patio fabric and cushions should be cleaned prior to storing. This will ensure that it doesn’t develop mold or mildew while in storage and means it’s ready to use when the weather starts to clear up. To do this, follow the instructions on the label for each fabric. If there are no instructions or the label has been removed, you can use a mild cleaning solution such as the one listed:

After making your cleaning solution, use a sponge with the detergent mixture to scrub the cushions, then rinse with water and leave the cushions to dry completely. You can also use this solution on your patio umbrella.

Before storing away in your storage unit, either wrap your cushions and fabrics in tarps or blankets, or put them in a container bin. This will keep the fabric clean safe while it’s being stored.

Plastic Furniture

Before storing any type of furniture, it’s important that it go into the storage unit clean, and properly protected. Fortunately, cleaning plastic furniture is fairly simple. All you need is a detergent solution, water, and a microfiber cloth. You can create your own cleaning solution using a mixture of dish soap and water, and rub it on using your microfiber cloth. Then, follow this process by rinsing the furniture with water.

Plastic furniture can become very brittle when it freezes, which can lead to cracking. In order to avoid this, be sure to store plastic furniture, such as tables and chairs, in a temperature controlled unit.

Metal Furniture

Metal is prone to rusting when it becomes wet, which can be very damaging to your furniture. For example, untreated rust can lead to the weakening of the metal and cause the material to begin breaking down. To prepare your metal furniture for long term furniture storage, treat any rusted areas with a rust-neutralizing primer and follow with paint to match the metal. Next, you’ll want to apply a coat of paste wax which protects the surface from water damage and will preserve the metal while it’s being stored. Lastly, be sure to keep your metal furniture in a dry Reno self storage unit and for added protection, cover it with a tarp to keep clean.

Wicker Furniturereno self storage furniture, wicker furniture baskets

Wicker furniture is more delicate than other types of patio furniture. Because of its design, dirt and dust often get trapped within the small crevices of the material which makes it more difficult to clean. Luckily, the process will be much easier with these tips. Start by dusting your wicker furniture with a clean soft-bristled paintbrush. The bristles will be able to get into the crevices much easier and will easily remove dirt from those hard to reach places. Then, use a cleaning solution of ¼ cup liquid dish soap and 2 cups of water with a microfiber cloth to wipe down your wicker surface. You can also add 1 cup of white vinegar to your solution if you notice any mold or mildew. And finally, apply a moisture repellent to the feet, legs and anywhere else the grain may be exposed.

Before storing your wicker furniture in a storage unit, be sure to cover it with a tarp or large cloth, and be sure to keep it dry.

Wood Furniture

When moisture gets trapped inside wood, it can cause irreparable damages. This is especially true if the water within the wood freezes because it can later cause the wood to crack. Also, it’s important to keep in mind that wood can absorb moisture in the air, so even if you cover your wood furniture, moisture can still get in. In order to completely keep moisture out of your wood furniture, coat it with a protective sealant.

The best way to keep wood patio furniture safe while it’s being stored in a Reno self storage unit, is to coat the surface with a sealant, and cover it with a tarp. This will also help keep it dust and dirt free.
